Well on my 4th Ford truck and I finally had the APIM/Telematics unit fail. Was told by the dealer they would order one but it was on "backorder" and could be anywhere from 1 day to a full year before I see it. @Ford Motor Company are you able to help?
What all does that control? I understand the Telematics part... which I have disabled on my truck... but I'm curious what else it does.
How on earth did it fail?
No clue how it failed but the symptoms were a non functioning GPS and then no access in the Fordpass App. Just over 8k miles on the truck as I snapped this picture of the mileage last week.
I got my truck back almost a week ago from a "no GPS" issue. Short version, truck had been in several times for a non functioning Traction Control button. Last time, it came back to me with no functioning GPS. But the GPS had been working before the truck went in. So I had no FordPass features without GPS. The GPS was actually frozen in time where it last worked. The dealer.
They had me bring in the truck to pull codes to prove to Ford what the issue was. Ordered the part and 3 days later they had the part and installed it. All fixed. There was never a mention of potential backorder.
Below is a screenshot of that section on the repair order. The amounts are billed to Ford as it's warranty.
I see nothing about an APIM anywhere in my RO.
Actually, I had something similar with my 2500HD... the GPS stopped working, so I asked about it the next time I took it in... it was the antenna. For $900 I can do without GPS...

Got my truck back from the dealer this afternoon (was also in for a brake booster sensor failure) and has almost the exact same description however the unit is on backorder. It is the Telematics module and NOT the APIM. I thought that they were the same but was mistaken.

I’m certainly not a systems engineer either so I had to look up the APIM’s function. If I understood correctly it mainly coordinates communication between various modules and the infotainment unit.
The first day they had my truck they said that there was trouble with it and a few other trucks communicating with Ford. Once that hurdle was cleared the diagnostic codes were sent to Ford to verify the problem. They told me it would be a couple of days for the part to arrive. I have another vehicle so I told them to keep the truck instead of shuttling back and forth. So it was there Monday through Friday.
Hopefully your part arrives soon and you’re back in business.
Got a call from my dealer earlier this week that the telematics module had arrived and got on the schedule for Friday morning. Dropped the truck off first thing and it was done by lunchtime and seems to be working as designed again.

Are these modules plug and play, or do they require more programming once installed?
I got my truck back yesterday from the local shop (not a Ford dealer) and it doesn't work any better than before. I'm thinking the module will need to be replaced, but would prefer to install myself, as long as it doesn't need programming.

The dealer indicated they needed to program it to my truck. No clue what's involved with that or if it can be done with Forscan or not.

I am working from memory here but I believe YES it needs to be programmed to the truck. Basically it needs to be able to communicate across the systems so all those numbers and nodes need to be programmed in.

Is your truck out of warranty? If not it’s better to let a dealer handle it in case there are future issues. They can’t somehow blame it on you for a self install/program. My earlier post shows pricing and part number.
I’d seriously doubt there’s a FORScan fix.

I live in a small Alaskan island community, no Ford dealership here so we have to use a couple of independent shops and pay upfront, then submit for reimbursement for any type of warranty support. Pain in the butt but it is what it is.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully your shop has decent communication with Ford and can get it sorted out for you.
