Hey guys I have a 05 expedition and this thing's got 208 k and it runs pretty well fires up first time no check engine light no lights at all for that fact idles perfectly but as I'm going down the road at light throttle it runs rough and it has a bucking jerking kind of motion but after 15 20% throttle it goes away but again at full pedal it comes back once in a blue moon I'll get a flashing check engine light but there's no codes so I don't know what the flashing means I'm assuming I might need new coil packs and spark plugs I don't want to have to dig into spark plugs if I don't have to for obvious reasons am I looking in the right direction or is there something else you could be and it doesn't matter whether it's cold or hot
A flashing CEL is a warning that there is a misfire sever enough to destroy the catalytic converters. Since the issue changes with the throttle movement, there is a possibility that the throttle position sensor (TPS) is faulty. If it's not, it might be time for new plugs and/or coil packs.
I had the same issue on my 03 5.4 2-valve. It took weeks of driving around town before the CEL finally hard-set and told me which cylinder had the misfire. The COP was failing. It happened again a few months later, so I ponied up and changed all the COPs and spark plugs. No more issue.
