I just bought a 2017 F250 XLT with several options but need to add a backup camera to it. The previous owner had the Ford dealership install an after market camera that bolts to the tag and displays in the rear view mirror when he bought it new but it quit working 3 days before I bought the truck. I'd like to figure out how to test this one to see if the camera or the mirror is bad cause I'd like to have the option of the camera displaying in both the mirror and dash screen if possible. I do have a good Fluke 87V meter to test with I just need a probe small enough to fit in the holes in the plug on the mirror end. The mirror seams to be getting no power there's no lights on it, no backup camera trying to display, and the mirror it self is not dimming either. I'm thinking of buying a ford tailgate latch with a camera and installing that . I know that I will need to at least buy the wiring harness that goes inside the tailgate that has a plug for a camera and power lock. The other end of that plug that plugs into the tailgate harness and goes to the front of the truck has several wires in it (the tailgate end only has 2 wires going to the plug) so I'm thinking my truck has the wiring run to the dash for a backup camera but just not in the tailgate. My truck does have the snow plow option on it too if that makes a difference on the way they wire them? Do all of the 2017 F250 XLTs have the backup camera wiring going to the dash or just some with certain options or am I just wrong and none have it? I would rather have a OEM style camera that unplugs from the wiring harness so when it goes bad I don't have to rewire it again or splice the wires. Also to get a camera to display on the 4" screen I think I'll either have to buy one with a OBII programmer or use forscan and a laptop to turn on the camera and guide lines functions? Which is the best way vs cheapest way? Is forscan a free software? Where do you get forscan from? Would it be that much harder to get and install a latch with the camera and a hitch light? How can I add a front camera that will show in the screen when I need it to? I also want to upgrade to the 8" screen after I get this camera issue fixed. As you can seen I have a lot on my mind and am scrambling to find answers and solutions. Any help would be appreciated. How about those in dash T style radios anybody know of a good one that works right and don't cause you to loose functions if so maybe thats and option for the bigger screen?
