ZF Rebuild or overhaul???

How hard is it to overhaul or freshen up a ZF 4x4 5 speed?
How much should I expect to pay if I have it done?

My dad's ZF 6 speed went out after warranty because a cooler line broke and leaked out all of the fluid. The 5 speed doesn't have these lines or cooler or pump but is very similar to the 6 speed. I bought a cd-rom manual showing a complete teardown and reassembly. Special tools are required that I did not have and I need to replace an expensive shaft (over $1000 alone). I decided that I could not afford any mistakes. The 4x4 version is no fun to pull, let alone more than once. I found that Blumenthal Mfg. in OKC was an authorized distributor for ZF (I did visit their webite too) and carried a good warranty/best price. I had to pay ~$2500+return a core. I was quoted prices over $3000 and many wanted to rebuild my core because not many 6 speeds are available yet. Blumenthal had one in stock and there are different versions according to year. I contacted Larry Church by e-mail and phone. They shipped for ~$85 return on core included. I had to drive to nearest Fedex Trucking dock and pick it up/ leave my core. Other shipping may be available and your version will definitely be cheaper than mine. I would not recommend rebuilding yours unless you have access to a full transmission shop. Larry was very busy but helpful and efficient. The transmission even came full of fluid. You can contact him by e-mail with a link at http://www.blumenthalmfg.com/contactus.html. I calleed at 3:00 pm. and my trans was unloaded at the dock by 5:30 am. next morning. There was some used sources slightly cheaper and closer to you if you'd rather contact them I can provide info but I choose to put a remanufactured trans in. No problems so far. My memory is far from perfect but I recall 5 speeds for $1300-$1700. Later '90's have a shorter updated version than the late 80's/early 90's. You can get numbers off the tag on driver's side and reference them over to a reman. number on Blumenthal's website or just give Larry your truck info. Hope this helps.

has a lot of info for ZF and their distributers. The ones in my state did not have 6 speed in stock and were priced higher than Blumenthal's. I am close enough to drive to OKC but I would have to pay sales tax. Since I ordered by phone, they did not collect sales tax which more than paid for shipping. It was here overnight so no time was lost. I did have to go to the dock etc. but it beats returning the truck to some local shop. All distributers may have the same transmission but aren't the same. You'll get good service and price from Blumenthal. I am not affiliated with them or related in any way, just a satisfied repeat customer.

Phoenix Hard parts sells on Ebay. They look like they have a large facility. They sell zf-5's for about $1100 plus core.... They have a high % of positive feedback, but I 've never dealt with them.
Might be worth taking a look.
