I got a 1987 F150 with 351W & C6 auto trans. Engine is locked up, can't rotate the crank to get the flex plate unbolted from the torque converter.
At the moment I don't have any help to take off the hood and don't think I can handle it by myself. Has anyone yanked a engine and trans out as an assembly? Can it be done without taking the hood off? It looks pretty tight. I have a portable engine hoist, not an overhead type, so I can reach under the hood a bit with it.

that,, my friend would be a chore. Frankly I'd try to hier some help just to take the hood off. Surely you could find some of the local highschool football team that needs a couple bucks.
I would remove the starter and remove all the bolts holding the transmission to the engine. Then raise the engine enough to let it come forward and pull the torque converter out of the transmission, leaving the transmission in the truck.
Of course you will have to remove the radiator and a bunch of other stuff from the engine. I would certainly still find someone to help you remove the hood. Other stuff including the motor mount bolts etc. will also need removed. Just my best suggestion.
I removed the hood from my 94 with my engine hoist. You use the open slots on the underside of the hood and some hooks.
To reinstall I used ratchet straps wrapped around the hood in such a way to tilt it to the angle of the hood hinges.
The other option is to take the front radiator support out.
It's kind of a pain- harder than the hood- but in my case it was really rusted,
so it had to come out anyway to get replaced.
The engine then slides out the front pretty easily, with lots of clearance.

Even simpler: Get a buddy, and the two of you can remove the whole front clip in one piece. Makes getting to everything all that much easier.
(Yes, I know the OP said he was all alone on this, but there's gotta be someone he could ask for help.....)
I removed the 351W out of my 95 Bronco with the hood in place and all by my lonesome.
Took less than 3 hrs from the time I pulled rig into garage until engine was on a stand.
Need to remove the radiator and place a pc of cardboard to protect the AC condensor
Just need to shorten up on the attachment chain and rotate the engine on the way out while rolling the truck back a little bit to clear everything, which is easier than rolling the cherry picker once it is bearing weight:
