Attack!! Attack!!!

Just a thought about the way a lot of the more controversial topics are discussed here.
I am just as guilty as most of you. When someone starts a topic that asks a question, such as
Are you for gun control? or
How does gambling....?
shouldn't we be stating our own views and opinions without trying to pick apart the views and opinions of others? It seems that the more heated topics end up going in the same direction as a political campaign. Instead of stating your opinion, what's good about it and why you think that way, most of us have to try and attack what we feel is an improper, uneducated response from those that we just asked for input. The politicians do this. They call it mudslinging. Instead of a person making a statement that is a testament to the way he/she feels or thinks, a lot of us take what someone else says and tries to find fault with it. I don't know about the rest of you, but I was always taught that an opinion cannot be wrong. Speak about the positive aspects of your view without trying to tear apart those that do not agree with you.

Like I said, I am guilty of this also, and I am going to make an effort to be a little more positive about what others have to say. Usually I don't object with what someone else says unless they say it about me, but from now on, I'll just "consider the source", as we used to say.

Doesn't this make sense? I am asking for OPINIONS. Opinions on the subject, not on MY views.

Attack!! Attack!!!

*tries to think like his Grandfather*

If we really look at it, the phrase "Consider the Source" carries with it an implication or two of it's own...

Do we trust the person, is the first. But then it of course leads to: "Is this someone above or beneath me?"

Which is why I recommend looking at the material presented (whatever is being discussed) on the basis of the facts themselves, and leaving all source and personality related considerations out of it.

-Is it factual?

-And even if not, are there compelling reasons to look at it from a different point of view?

I know that my own position on everything is not the only one possible. I am not about to surrender everything I believe in because someone else swears by another brand of spark-plug, but I AM willing to explore it...

I really don't believe the source is a huge consideration. Suprising things can come from the last place we might believe them from...

But weigh them with a grain of either salt or sand. Look for proofs, before jumping in - the pool might be empty...

Attack!! Attack!!!

I don't really read much of anything around here unless it's on-line.

I really enjoy most of the threads here feel good that I've actually learned something.

I REALLY appreciate the INTELLIGENT DEBATES that go on here.

I have no appreciation for Personal attacks. It's much like how a BULLY does things, and we all know what happens to those people.

As long as nothing gets out of hand by Total disrespect including name calling, and using profanity,I don't really mind a good debate.

I should call Mil1ion a dummy sometime, just to see what happens...

*waggezz tail*

But I bet it would be treated in the fun it was offered in....

*Wigglezz on the living room carpet on his back, joyfully*

I have to admit - this is a fun place to be. Very "homelike", and that's the best part!

*Paws the rug for a second, and then gets up to go seek his water bowl*

Watch out, icelander, or people might actually think we are getting along

No truce needed. You're OK with me!!

Of course I would have to rethink this matter if that OTHER guy responds.

icelander,
Well, just so we're square, I tried to re-rate you and apologize for the negative rating that I gave you back when I was throwing a childish fit of anger, mainly because of stab. I found out I couldn't change it. Now, if I think I want to rate someone, I am going to give it some time and read some more of their posts, and hopefully make an educated decision. I do learn by my mistakes.
