So as I was trying to get out the ignition switch to clean it came apart. Now I have no idea where this little gold piece goes? Switch is for an ‘84 F150, 351w & c6. Thanks for any help.
I'm just guessing, I would think that something needs to rotate to take that brass piece and make it contact both those copper pieces ? So in my mind, maybe that piece lays in around the two copper items.
Given the chance to spend your time and money, I'd simply replace the whole switch. Get the existing switch back together and it comes apart again at some inopportune time? That would leave you stranded. A new genuine Motorcraft SW2473 will set you back about $25 or so.
I agree. I was having problems with my switch and already had a new one to go in. When I took the old one out it fell apart. No wonder it was not working correctly.
I’m stumped. I’ve fooled with this thing for an hour and I cannot for the life of me figure where that piece goes. The switch came apart because one of the tabs that holds it together was opened up a little too far, so an easy fix. But what ever that piece is, it matters. The truck won’t start now.
I looked the ignition switch up, it doesn't look like it has a ground wire going to it. I bet that piece is a ground and grounds a part of the switch through the switch metal housing. They use a ground to the switch for the light bulb test when you turn the switch to crank position. Learn something new everyday.
That is exactly what it does @Franklin2 so turns out @Max Capacity was right in his initial suggestion. Once I got the original switch back together and in the truck fired right up and no more sticking ignition.
