My idle on my '85 f-150 300 is way too high. When you kick it down from high idle when you start it, it is not tooo bad at 1100rpms.
When it warms up, it wants to high at 1400-1500rpms. It is a manual, so it doesn't want to run away, but its is really annoying. It has that dumb ECV-IV, so I don't know how to adjust the idle. The other thing I noticed is it looks like some one swapped carbs. The TPS (I guess its the TPS, its on the front of the carb) has a 4 prong connector (with 3 wires) and the harness has a 3 connector with 3 wires (the wire colors are the same on both connectors, so I figure they were meant to go together).
Plus the retard that had the truck b4, blocked of the EGR entirely. GRR!
I have the exact same condition as you, just in reverse...mine is a lot more simplistic than yours, in that i have an idle adjustment screw that will not stay adjusted, so i'm seeing some loc-tite in its future...along with the screws at the base of the carb.
Actually it sounds like if this truck was EFI, you'd have a bad IAC...with the wandering idle and all.. It could very possibly be the TPS sensor... or something like that.
IF you are unsure about the carb, rebuild it, or convert your truck back to the duraspark II setup from previous trucks if you don't have underhood emissions inspections....they'll never know and the system is easier to use.
Just search the forums for this swap, theres tons of info about it.

Hmm. I'll have to check it for a vaccum leak. that wouldn't surprise me. that harness is pretty chewed up, along with a lot of other stuff.
I am going to splice the TPS back together, unless I can get to a junkyard and get the right one. This trunk very low budget, and I'd like to keep it the way it is if possible.
Also, I did the DSII convertion on my '84 2wd, works great. The only question is which 1bbl carb do you use to replace the feedback? I used a 4bbl, but I want to keep this system asap (as stock as possible). I've know there is a Carter YFA, and I think there is a holley?? Which is the better one? (I am going to buy one new if I do it, since all the trucks I've seen have about a zillion miles on them, and the carb are shot ).
zampiro: sorry about the dissing. If you saw what the previous owner did (asside from the emissions) you probably wouldn't be as upset!.
I had the same problem with high idle. My power booster for the brakes was shot. Try taking the vacuum line off and plug it and see if it helps. My 2 cents
Or if you have a propane torch, you can use it to find vaccum leaks. Open the torch valve DO NOT LIGHT THE TORCH. Pass the unlit torch over all the vaccum lines with the engine running. The idle sound will change when you find a leak.
The Type of carb ive most commonly seen on 300's is the Carter YF or YFA. I think the carter YFA is the feedback version though. IF it were me i'd just do the DSII conversion and get it over with, all of it can be done for under a $100 and i bet you'd have a better running truck because of it.
Go with jrs idea with the propane torch UNLIT propane torch to check for vacuum leaks around the carb, intake and wherever else you know there is a vacuum source running to.
My truck always wanted to ilde high (86 F-150 4x4 300 4 spd. man.) I meen like 2100 and kicked down 1550, it was messed up, I messed and messed w/ that dumb carb, finally on account from my erractic-engine killing driving conditions I blew out the diaphram, black smoke just rollin out, well that was it, went to O'reilly's and bought the rebuilt Holley 1 barrel. Idles about 900 to 1200 now, works great.
