I recently bought a 1993 Ford E350 with the 351 & E4oD. The previous owner provided a receipt showing that a remanufactured transmission was put in.
After driving the van for about 200 miles, I noticed that transmission fluid was dripping from the bottom. After bringing it back to the shop that installed the tranny, I learned that the trans fluid was apparently overfilled, and was being pushed out of the top pressure vent.
The mechanic said this is most likely, but it’s also possible there is a warped piece in the trans that is causing this. The van was driving mint even while leaking.
Thankfully the trans was under warranty and they are shipping a new one out and installing it under warranty (thank God because it was $4,400).
I have two questions:
Is it worth paying the $1200 core charge to keep the old trans?
Do you agree with the mechanics assessment based on the info I’ve provided?
The shop checked the fluid after I towed there and said it must have been overfilled because it was sitting at normal levels when hot after the leak (I don't understand this because they are the ones who originally filled it up). I had it towed to the shop after discovered it was leaking because it is under warranty.
There was less than 100 miles on the trans when I bought it.
I would not keep the core
Let them fix it under warranty and take your truck away
That fluid expands a bunch when hot
Chances are they just filled it to the full hot mark when it was cold
No big deal, but let them replace the trans (again)
