A few weeks ago the truck started randomly cutting off and starting back up a few times. I noticed when this happen all the gauges would go dead. This has happened 5 or 6 times in the past few weeks.
Now the truck won't start, it will crank just fine. What I have noticed is when i turn the key to run the gauges don't cycle through like the should. Also the radio wont turn on. I have good fuel pressure and it will start with starting fluid so that makes me think something with the electrical system is not powering the injectors. My guess would be wiring, computer, or ignition switch, but I don't know where to start or how to test it. I was looking for a wiring diagram on google and couldn't find anything that helped.
Any tips or advice would be great. This is my work truck so for the time being I got my wife's van full of tools and yall can guess how that is going for me.
It might sound silly, but check all the fuses and relays. I only say this because sometimes I don’t check fuses myself at all first and go crazy about an issue until someone reminds me to do that first, especially when it comes to electrical. We just had a truck taken from work because of a no start issue but would crank over and we were looking around until I thought about fuses and lone behold it had a bunch of blown fuses, but that’s a different issue in itself. I’m sure someone with better knowledge or even a “this is exactly what’s wrong” will chime in.
Sounds like an intermittent open circuit in one of the critical feeds that have to go through the ignition switch in the RUN position. Might be the switch itself, one of the associated fuses is loose or corroded, or an loose wire connection.
As a first step, I'd pull each fuse, ONE AT A TIME, and check to see if there are any loose contacts that can be noticed. Check for corrosion. If none of that pans out, I'd try a new ignition switch and see how that goes.
