My very faithful '93 F-150 would not start this morning. Never mind the fact that is was 8 degrees. She always starts in cold weather. Key in ignition turn and all lights come on as normal. When I engage the starter I just here a click. No turning over.
Battery is fine, and I have NEVER had a problem with the starter before.
Only thing: when I backed into my parking space last night I turned the engine off before I shifted into Park. Not something I usually do, I was working on shutting everything else off.
I was thinking I need to try and put it in gear and rock it maybe. Maybe some switch in the tranny did not get thrown or something when I shut her off last night? Will try that after work. Any other suggestions?
Make sure you put it back in park before trying to restart it. It doesn't really matter that you killed it in reverse or what have you. just push in the brake and put it into park. The key may have to be in the on position to do this i don't know. other than that it might be a loose wire to your starter or the solenoid.
I recently had starting woes on my '88 F150...
My problem turned out to be the ignition control module.
First, you hear clicking when you turn the key.
1 - Check the fuel shut off switch, make sure that is not tripped.
2 - Do you hear the fuel pumps whine for 1 or 2 seconds when you turn the key on, not starting? If not, check fuses.
3 - I would check the starter. Make sure all connections are tight (electrical and mounting bolts).
4 - There is a safety switch that does not allow you to start in anything but park or neutral (automatic), or with clutch pushed in (manual). Check that out.
5 - Check if fuel is getting into the combustion chamber.
6 - Is there spark (easy to check)
The clicking really leads me to a starter problem, at least in my experience. If there was no clicking, then I would say electrical somewhere. Make sure those starter electrical connections are secure. Last starter problem I had, the whole electrical connection oin the starter had melted away. Covered under crappy tire (canadian) warrenty, thankfully.
Try tapping lightly on the starter with a hammer. Sometimes this jars the starter to work again. It also tells you that the starter has just about had it too. Time to replace.
I have had a lot of starter and soleanoid problums b4 check you soleanoid (cyl-a-noid) the click tell's me thats what it is just a couppel of wires (rember where they go veary important ) and any auto part store can check it for you are you may have left some thing on check your battarey (also unlikeley but your soleanoid may be on your starter ) but i am shure that will most defunutley fix your problum Good luck
My starter went about like that. Worked great until it quit. I was parked under the highway and leaving a downtown convention center event and all it would do is click. Smacked it a couple of times with a big wrench and it started. I put a new starter and soleniod in it that night and haven't had a starting problem since. Just for grins, you might be sure your battery and cables are good and the terminals are clean.
Be carefull taping with a hammer, or you'll break a magnet in the case and you'll have to buy a new starter instead of having it rebuilt, and the pmgr starter is not cheap.
Thanks for all your help. Turns out, I replaced the battery which was what lots of people suggested. No dice. Frustratred I went ahead and removed and cleaned all the connection on the solenoid and starter, even though they looked fine, and she starts. The battery was old and leaking anyway. But I am back in business and busted through the snow to work this morning no problem.
