I replaced my damaged speedo cable. It didn't come with a replacement o-ring so I used the old one. Noticed random oil spots on the driveway and it was from the cable. Pulled it back out and the o-ring was cracked. Purchased replacement o-ring on Ebay and swapped it out. Drove it again and still oil is dripping from cable. Not a lot, just a random drop here and there. I searched this forum and the last post said to check the T-case breather valve. I pulled the cap, stuck a zip tie inside and it seemed clear so I reinstalled the breather cap & spring assembly. Drove it again and still has oil running down the cable. Someone mentioned putting RTV sealant on the cable before inserting it into the transfer case but I am not sure of this or exactly what/how to do.
Anyone else have this issue or a proper fix besides RTV sealant or is that the best solution? Thanks for your help!
I had the same problem and it was driving me crazy. Brand new cable from Dennis Carpenter. Turned out it was leaking were the cable is crimped to the assembly. I put RTV in that area and it fixed the problem.

damn, that’s a good point may not be an issue with the seal after all. I’ll check and add some rtv at the crimp
Is it safe to pull out the cable, pull off the breather cap and hit the breather hole with compressed air to ensure it’s not clogged?
or on second thought, maybe I should compressed air in the breather hole with the speedo cable in and see where it’s leaking from
I put low pressure air into breather hole. Fluid leaked out of the crimp on the Speedo cable like c391d said. I went around the crimp and put some rtv sealant. Is that all or should I pack it on there heavy? I just filled the crack and where the crimp was and made it look clean?
That is all I did, I just tried to push RTV into the crack.. I didn't put it on heavy but you could if you want to. Hope it works because I know how aggravating it was for me.
