I want to build a Harley Davidson

I want it to be an old one - the year I was born.

And I want it to get away from people. Far away...

I have been crushed in with a lot of people I don't really want to be around for a long time - so long that I can't imagine peace and quiet, no loud voices and ignorant laughter. No stupid people that slam things when they put them down, and bitch about things they have done to themselves.

I am allergic to idiots, and I want to get away.

Far away - far enough to hear the wind echo over an empty highway.

I want to see the stars clear and bright, listen to owls hunting.

I want to be left alone long enough to find my inner peace again...

I want to ride the highway!

I've heard of a lot of places supposedly good for rounding up old Hog parts, and I like the idea of taking a year off to go on an extended road trip...

Sure! Why not...

Stage 1 will be the "Getting the bike together" road trip. I'll need at minimum a frame and a motor & tranny. Best scenario would be a basket-case bike, complete but totally disassembled. There hasta be a major Harley scrapyard somewhere around the southwest.

The lower end needs to be setup by someone that knows their business with three-piece cranks, the rest will be me myself and I incorporated. If he's still around, I know just the man for that part - lives in Escondido last I heard.

Stage 2 will be test rides.

Stage 3 will be shear escapism...

Are you planning a unique bike or you simply restoring it to what it was? I would recommend the route of buying one that is already running and riding it. Then, as time permits restore the basket case. Bikes create fevers. -I must ride and I will ride NOW!

I don't think you will have any trouble finding one that needs a little love. You may have trouble finding one that is all orginal though.

I am trying to avoid getting my Cycle endorsement.. This way I will never actually buy the Harley I so desperately want.

I'm not gonna ride a hog that isn't built MY way.

Someone elses attempt at cobbling together a motorcycle would be unsatisfying and likely dangerous...

Assuming it even ran.

You will be amazed at what you find when you start looking. Odds are if it is a Harley, somebody has done something to it at one time or another.

Especially if you want one from the year you were born.

Even if you bought a cheap Jap bike, you could ride it at least while devoting time and money to the Harley. When the bike is ready, sell the rice bike.

Frig a ricer.

I sold the last one I had for a DOLLAR.

It isn't about a pair of wheels - it's about tradition.

LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO RIDE RICE

Not to mention:

If I have to explain it, you wouldn't understand it...

Last bike I had was a Norton Commando.. A very nice bike, but I really want a Hog. I have never bothered to get the Cycle added to my license, so I suppose I should start with that, someday.

No problem Wolf. I understand your point.

Myself? If it has two wheels and runs good, the need to ride overcomes tradition.

My last rice bike I put 60K on it. Looked like it was new when I sold it and I got nearly what I paid for it. Worked for me.

Theo, you'd look good on a bike I'd bet.

I suppose I could brag some and say I look good anywhere... but that is sinful of me..

I used to ride all of the time, but never took the US test to get it on my license. Why they wouldn't transfer it from my international license I do not know, but that is 10 years ago now, so probably time to go to school again.. (the only place to find a bike to take the test on.)

Then, I will buy an Electraglide, metalic blue, and just be hog heaven.

Theo
