This van starts great when cold, but when it's hot I have to wait an hour or two before it will start. I've replaced the starter, solenoid, plug wires, distributor, and adjusted the timing. Can anyone help? This is driving me crazy.
Yep check that module, had it go out twice on me. If you have a stock distribitor and do change out the part, see about changing those bolts. I run an MSD now and it found that it doesn't require that special socket to remove the module.
AutoZone or Advance will test the TFI module for you.
I always hover over their shoulders to see if it fails for myself.
Later modules were moved to the firewall from the dizzy.
When cold, I've tried heating them up with the wife's hairdrier to see if it failed to start. Oh! and when you do take it off, make sure you pull it straight down, not outwards towards you.
This doesn't answer your question but I use the Hayne's manual for the E series and it's invaluable for all aspects of repair of the van. It's got a trouble shooting section that has your question mentioned.
I had a similar problem with my 85. It turned out to be a broken ground cable where it bolted to the block. It had nothing to do with heat, just mentioning how those simple things will drive ya to drink. I had to bring it back to the dealer seven times before they found it.
It was resting on the bolt, and looked like it was ok, but if you grabbed the cable, you could see it was just resting there. That was the last new one for me. If you have probs like that in a new car sometimes you can't even get a part to try. Too new.
