I'm considering purchasing a 1990 F-350 4x4 from a fire department. It is the regular 133" wheelbase, not the common 137" cab/chassis option I regularly see, so I am thinking wheelbase-wise, a standard bed will fit on it. It is single real wheel. It has a utility bed on it currently, I want to put a standard ford bed on it if I were to buy it. I get a lot of misleading online info as to whether it will fit. The truck shows F38 in the VIN which lists as a c/c F350 4x4. standard F350 4x4's list as F36.
By wheelbase and track width, I would think a standard bed would fit on it. But due to it being a c/c truck, I am unsure of if the frame bolt holes are there or in different locations. Surely others here have done this. If the frame is indeed different behind the cab, will the regular bed sit on that frame if I were to just make new mounts for it? Or, would the bed sit too high on the frame to line up with the cab?
It's located in another state, so I can't just go out and measure it myself.
if it is indeed a F-38 single rear wheel cab/chassis truck, the frame will be 3 inches narrower than a regular pickup.
which means you will either have to redrill the mount holes in the bed, or extend the bed mounts wider off the frame.
is it just bolt hole placement that I will have to contend with, or will I have to raise or lower the cab mounts to then line up with the bed (in other words, will the bed sit too high on the c/c frame?)
crew cab frame is flat. pickup frame has a "hump" over the rear. to use a pickup bed on a cab chassis truck. you should really fab up the hump section to add under bed if you are going to haul heavy weights.
i did not on the first bed, and i sagged over the axle.
the second one had the hump added and it lasted over twenty years before rotting out. the current bed has only been on the truck about 5 years.
but the bed will sit even with the cab.
that is all rite.
i am not always rite. and freely admit when i am corrected about posted wrong advice.
and i do not answer posts i know nothing about.
