I ve had vibration problems from the driveshaft since I ve had my truck
its 01 f250-4x4-supercab-long bed--5.4
the ford stealership put new driveashaft in and new u joints and some bearing assy. and a shim kit--the vibrations are still there and Ford refuses to put any more time or money into my problem
any one have this problem or know a solution?
thanks
Josh
Did they have the shaft spun balanced? Did they put bearing grease in the slip yoke and splines between the 2 shafts? This is a known problem area. I was having a clunking sound when pulling from a dead stop. Dropped the shaft, carrier bearing. Put grease on splines and yoke and reinstalled. Haven't had a problem since.
What RPM does it occur? Did they reinstall the shaft correctly? I would force the issue with the repair they did.
One other thing you might check is the rear transmission mount. It could be shot.
thanks for the reply--Ill check the mount and as far as grease I cant believe any average skilled mechanic would not do so
but its fmc
the dealers 1st idea to fix the problem was replace the u joints in doing so the mechanic removed a frozen joint with his air chisel and warped the driveshaft in the process--they sent it out to balance to no avail--then they had to just get a new driveshaft
I knew a guy working in the shop --thats how I got this inside info
any way ford headquarters and the dealer refuses to even look at the issue any more
so I guess I will have to fix it on my own or at a private shop that actually has some knowledge
thanks

It's evident that particular dealership has incompetent mechanics there. An air chisel.......I wouldn't do business with them anymore! If they ordered a new shaft from Ford it would have came installed with U-joints and Carrier bearing. All they had to do was install it. They've already charged you for the repair.....right? Or, is it a warranty job? In any case they have made it worse. You might need to speak to someone higher up.
I think a call to your Attorney General's Office is in order. I'd tell'em that if they don't fix it now and fix it right!!
You might try to install a shim kit yourself. I had vibration problems after 4wheelparts installed a 4" lift on my 2WD truck. It only happened when I accelerated fairly hard from a stand still, in 1st gear but it was pretty severe. After talking to a few people, I was told to shim the center carrier. There is a TSB for this problem. This may not be what your problem is but the TSB from Ford says that "customer may experience driveline vibration at launch due to improper shimming of the center carrier bearing." The shims that Ford sells are only 1/4" thick and they advise to use no more than 3 of them at a time for a total of 3/4" carrier bearing drop. (This is obviously bovine secretions because half of the people who have done that still have some or the same vibrations.) I bought a kit made by ProComp at 4wheelparts that includes about 10 shims of different thickness, new longer bolts and new washers. The sales' guy told me that this happens a lot to 4WD trucks right from the factory, without even a lift being installed or anything. He also told me that when they shim a truck, they end up using "MOST" of the shims in the kit. He wasn't kidding. I used all but the two thinest shims for a total of 1 3/4 " lowering! All you need is a torque wrench and some LocTite. There are absolutely no vibrations whether I take off smoothly or use my binary throttle. The kit is about $38.00 with taxes. I hope this can help.
hello--thanks for the info--it is very helpfull
do you possibly have a part number for that shim kit or phone number for the place to buy or web address
thanks
Josh
The web site is www.4wheelparts.com. I couldn't find the item on their web site but you can probably order it over the phone. (There's a store locator on their web site.) They will definitly know what you want as this is a very common problem. The part number on my invoice is:
EXP 52480 CARRIER DROP SUPER DUTY. I think it was either a ProComp or SuperLift brand item, not sure. The kit was only $31.99 so it's not too big of an investment.
