Howdy y’all, I just picked up a 64 f100, I’m experiencing a unique rust location on my truck. I removed the old headliner and, due to a leak in the roof, it accumulated rust in the rear just above the rear window. I’m talkin thinner than paper. Ive sealed it with epoxy for now but the rust goes down to the window gasket, so it’ll be a pain to replace. Would a cab swap be in order? I’m a student so if there’s any other proper solution to it I’d be happy for input, but I also want to treat the car with respect so whatever is best. Thank you all for your advice and I’m happy to be joining the FTE.
this photo is before the epoxy sealant was applied but shows the extent of the rust.
I definitely wouldn’t consider swapping the cab if that’s the only bad rust spot you’ve got. A decent body man can make a patch for that section.
I personally wouldn’t even bother with it, just drive it. I would tackle other projects first and fixing that rust section would be way down on my list of priorities.
I gauge if a cab is savable by the drip edge of the roof b/c my limited welding skills run out quickly and that area is pretty complex. My original cab was rotted through all around the drip rail and started to rust the inside the roof framework etc. If the rest of cab is decent, I'd just see if anyone (me included) could cut a section out of a parts cab for you and ship it, you'd have to pull the window but I don't think it would be bad. ad its a pretty flat area. If your cab ALSO needs floors, braces etc, then it could be worth it to cab swap depending on what you can find one for.
I would not swap the cab if that is your only issue. As long as you have it sealed up I wouldn't worry about it until your are ready to do body and paint, in the mean time try to get that section from a cab with rotted out floors and a good roof. I would get a new window gasket though and install, yours looks pretty bad. Not expensive or hard to install.

I like that idea, I’m not super keen on a cab swap but was thinking that was my only option. The floor has a small rust spot and the cab corners are rusty but that’s some easy fixes. Do you have a parts cab part you’d be willing to sell? If not I can make another post asking people but I think you’re right that would be easiest
I do, you'd just have to wait a bit on it until I start cutting into it bc that cab is protecting some of the parts I'm using on my build. I should be at that point before spring, but there may be someone who can send it your way sooner.
I have a cab that I’m not going to use. I could cut a piece out of it. Would be shipping from Canada so have to see how big a piece you need to see if it’s economical to ship. , Doug.
Howdy Doug I’m thinking it would be that whole area starting from below the top part of the window gasket up to the roof. Better minds then me might know but I was just looking at the cancerous rust and it extends that whole length and into the mounting area for the window (see photos). I found a cab about an hour and a half north or me for 250, I’m going to check it out today just to see, if it’s solid I may scalp it and use the roof and rear wall on my current cab….
so many options, I’ll let you know after I check out the cab today what would be best. Thanks

If you have rust there you'll probably need a new roof, they rot from the inside out so it'll be worse inside. I documented what the inside looks like between the seams on the '66 I'm building starting at post 139.
Very hard to determine proper repair or replace with only 1 photo. If there is rust there it usually means a lot more rust elsewhere. Front and rear cab corners, floors.
if you cannot do proper rust repair yourself you would be much better off replacing cab.
