So, random question... how much would a 99 f550 auto, be worth, "was driving, lost power, lots of white smoke...."
im not looking to lose my 250, by any means... and the old autos, bring a new set of headaches... buut, im wondering if the 550 would give a chonkier tow rating, overall?
That would depend on a lot of details not listed. Mileage, condition, options, 2x or 4x, those kinds of things. I'm sure location and current truck market there could play in there too.
I would offer $1500 or so for a non-running truck if the body was nice. MAYBE a little more if I chose to invest some time in diagnosing it before purchase.
It may need injectors ($2500) or another engine ($5000+). A brake job can cost well over $1000 in just parts. Tires for that truck are probably $2000. Oil cooler rebuild with cooling system flush and oil change is about $500 in parts. Steering gear, ball joints, etc, etc all add significant expense to the ‘fixer up’ cost.
As far as towing, the F550 has bigger brakes and can handle more tongue weight due to heavier suspension and higher load rating on tires. It will also have a lower gear ratio (typically 4.88 or 5.38).
The cab chassis truck will also require a ‘commercial insurance policy’. Probably not a deal breaker, but definitely worth getting a quote before you pull the trigger.

My premium actually went down when I switched to a commercial policy, and that was for more than double the liability coverage. Now this was on a F250 SD so no telling when you start getting into medium duty trucks. I've noticed though that insurance premiums can change noticeably depending on the level of voodoo your agent puts into it.
Probably lost an o-ring in one of the fuel injectors or cracked a cup. Nothing that cannot be fixed without spending a lot of money. If you do decide to get it and make it roadworthy, your F250 will feel like a Toyota in comparison. They tip the scale at more than 9,000lb empty. Often more. Mine is just over 10k with the hitch and full fuel. But it pulls like a bull elephant when I have the trailer connected. Only the steep mountain passes slow me down with GVW at around 27,000.
Could be a nice truck…Crew cab 550’s with genuine Alcoa wheels from this era are not easy to come by and sounds like it’s probably a high-spec build…again not very common. Vast majority of them were single cab base model XL work rigs that are beat POS’s by now. Would be a dream rig for me if not for the 4R100. Also didn’t say if it was 2x4 or 4x4.
Like Jason said you’d want to call your insurance company and see if they’d even offer coverage for a truck above 14,000 GVWR.
From the pictures, its 2x4... no button or lockers that i can see. Has some paint issues on the passenger side. Leather, power seats. So it probably is a nicer package. I personally like the zf6.... but in this instance, the auto has a point. Id like everyone else to be comfortable driving it.
if the decision is made to go for this... ill probably leave it stock, except a turbo upgrade and a hydra, H&H.... the goal would be to have it as a hauler. So i cant go souping it up to much
2x4 would be my preference on a truck like that anyway…fair weather highway hauler. Not having the 2-Lo mod available would be the only bummer with that 4 speed auto. A rare truck like that could be an interesting candidate for an Allison 1000 swap though.

I put all my other vehicles except motorcycle on my commercial policy because it was also less for me.
sorry, no. I meant i missed this swap/mod as a thing. To my knowledge its still available. Ironically, another one 6 hours closer has come up for sale.... but its 15k, almost 3 times the asking.

Let’s see the 15k one.
Allison swap is big bucks though. But ZF6 swap involves cutting into the floor pan which would be a shame on a nice old truck.
