Hello everyone,
Does any one make a decent wheel cylinder anymore?
Just about a year ago I put all new brakes on my 63 F100. New master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and shoes.
The brakes worked pretty decent, but always pulled slightly to one side or the other. Nothing serious just enough to be aggravating.
A few days ago, I found the master cylinder low on fluid. I pulled the front wheels off, and found one of my new wheel cylinders leaking.
These were the better quality cylinders, and were supposed to have a life time warranty. Tonight I went in to talk to O'reilly Auto Parts to discuss warranty, and was told they were only one year, and were out of warranty 2 days ago.
So I am open for suggestions on where to get the next ones at? Obviously the big green "O" is not going to get to sell me any more parts.
Any thought on where a person might get some quality wheel cylinders?
I would assume that they are all imported from Asia...however, members here might have suggestions for US made cylinders. I bought mine from Rock-Auto about 6 years ago and they have been just fine. I also use silicone brake fluid which can be more difficult to keep within the closed brake system. I can't remember which ones I purchased but, like you, I will usually spend a little more for something as important as brake components. That being said, they're all under ten dollars.
I prefer the Wagner Lockheed and Bendix brand wheel cylinders myself. Made in the USA and you can get rebuild kits for them that are also all USA made.
Thank you guys. I will see if I can fine some of the Wagner's. So far my search has turned up only more china made parts...
That was what I used on it 30 years ago, but the auto parts stores seemed to be able to come up with was the Asian junk.
I did switch to dot 5 fluid, but did not realize that it was harder to keep in.
Buttoning up the system so that the silicone fluid doesn't leak out really isn't the major concern with it. Bleeding can be more difficult, especially if the fluid is agitated or foamed. Plus...all rubber components need to be replaced and any trace of Dot 3 fluid removed. Still...I wouldn't go back due to the multiple advantages of Dot 5....probably a thread for another day just to support the varying opinions regarding the change.
Good catch, and you are correct, and apparently that was a single year better idea that was not....
The truck did come with the single piston cylinders, but they were changed out when the truck was pretty new.
Dad bought it new, and discovered the brakes were not up to the job, with the camper installed. I think he went to the salvage yard and got some used ones, and installed them. Apparently they were a direct bolt on, but I cant say for sure, as he may have bought the backing plates and any other hardware that was needed.
When I changed out all the parts last year, all lines were flushed and the master cylinder was new, as well as all the wheel cylinders.
So far no luck sourcing the Wagner cylinders.. I think they may have stopped producing them.
You might need to clean up one of the backing plates and look at the PN on it to see what year it is from. Just looking at a couple of old threads it seems there are different cylinders for pre 63 than for 64. Usually, NAPA gives a choice between cheap Chinese and more better Chinese.
I have had excellent results with White Post Restorations in White Post Virginia. They bore out the cylinders and press in a stainless sleeve. Not cheap but will be the last time you will need to replace your brake parts.
