I don't know what emissions equipment your engine has, but on my `85 460 I had air pumps, EGR, and delayed vacuum advance to the distributor.

Everything was non-functioning when I got the truck. The EGR was not functioning, the vacuum advance on the distributor was not working (hole in the diaphragm), and every other rubber hose and anything that had a diaphragm was a source of a vacuum leak due to dry rot.

So I yanked everything out. I pulled the air pumps and all the vacuum lines. I replaced the vacuum advance module on the distributor (and set the ignition timing from 2 degrees retarded to 12 degrees advanced) and the PCV. Those are the only two items left; two vacuum hoses and that’s it.

I have also installed the pre-1972 cam timing gear when I replaced the timing chain. To get closer to the pre-emission spec's I installed an Edelbrock carb model 1406 which is a 600 cfm non-emissions unit.

Plus, when I installed the Edelbrock I removed the EGR plate and put in a two inch spacer. I plugged the exhaust opening in the intake with JB Weld. The 1406 is a pre-emission carb, therefore I don’t have pre-ignition at part throttle, as is normally the case when the EGR is disconnected. If you discard all the emissions stuff spend some time dialing in the fuel mixture.

My goal was to get the motor to pre-emissions spec, at least to the extend possible with low compression ratio. It is pretty much there and now runs nice. Plenty of go for an 8,000 lbs truck.

I hope that helps, but feel free to ask if you need anything clarified.

Good luck,

Mark
