magnaflow w/o cats?

hi guys!

My 82 E350 van w/ mildly built 400 currently has dynomax headers (1-1/2" primaries, 2-1/2" collectors) into a 2-1/2" to 3" Y-pipe to a single Flowmaster 50 Deltaflow and 3" tailpipe. No cats.

This is simply too loud, especially inside the open space of the cargo van. The resonance at idle and around 45-55mph is quite something...

I purchased a larger Mganaflow (12589, 5x11x22" oval with single center in/offset out - about ) and showed it to my exhaust guy, who claims to have 23yrs experience with racing exhaust systems.

He told me the straight-thru design of the magnaflow is intended for system with catalytic converters, which act as a sort of pre-muffler, and that this muffler on my system will be LOUDER, even tho it has about twice the internal volume of the Flow 50.

I wish i could just try the magnaflow, but then i wouldn't be able to return it if my exhaust guy is correct...

what do you think? Do I NEED a baffled muffler for maximum quiet? Has anyone out there compared a flow 50 to a bigger magnaflow on a system without cats? If the magnaflow is not the right thing, what is for maximum quiet without too much restriction? Flow 70 maybe? or big Gibson? or maybe i should add a resonator in the system before the muffler?

Thanx!

I'm no exhaust expert here but on my truck my system is shorty headers, single 3" pipe after y pipe with 2nd cat removed to a Magnaflow SI/DO oval muffler and it's about upper low to medium loud. I ran a 30" glaspack as a resonator for a while and it didn't quit it down much at all if any.

If your really wanting to tone it down you might consider a Gibson or Borla muffler or maybe a 3" highflow cat. That will make it more quit and the state of California will like you that much more .

thanks, mike.

i run no cats cuz this beast never had any cats nor need them to be CA legal.

i might consider adding a cat, if it makes it more quiet and/or easier to pass smog, but i'm pretty sure it would pass as is. i have kept EGR, AIR, etc, and it's running quite lean.

just noisy...

Makes no diff. to me if you have cats or not, I'm runing catless myself. I just know that catylytic convertors have quite a muffling effect on the exhaust tone and adding a high flow unit by catco or the like might be a cheaper alternative then messing around with expensive mufflers .

I just put a Magnaflow on my 97 4.0 Ranger.. and it sounds about like stock, its real quiet, I was disapointed when I got it on because I wanted more sound than this muffler had to offer, the guys at the muffler shop told me before I had them put it on that people are complaining about how quiet they are,

Currently running a Mflow on my '89 Big body / 5.0L. After the Y-pipe, it's a 3" single exh. all the way back, with a hollow (3" pipe straight through) catalytic converter. It has a very mellow tone actually, and is quite pleasing under acceleration. Barely more audible than normal at idle, and w/ slight resonation only around ~50 MPH.

It's actually not really as aggressive sounding as (I'd like) but sounds to be like just what you may be looking for. Good luck.

geezer,

does the 3" pipe thru your fake cat have holes in it? or is it solid? i understand a hollowed out cat would act as a resonating chamber and would be quieter than a 3" pipe without a resonating chamber, like i currently have. If you do indeed have a solid 3" pipe running thru your cat and find the Magnaflow to be quiet, that may the 'vote of confidence' i need to at least try out the one i have...

thanx!

No, there are no holes in the thru-pipe. (Somebody correct me if I"m wrong, here) but I'm under the impression that holes in the pipe or just a hollow cat as so many people run; will actually cost you a small amount of power, as the rapid expansion (cooling) and then compression (heating) of the exhaust gases when flowing from the 3" pipe, into a ~8" pipe (false cat,) then back to a 3", is unnecessary and inefficient.

i did it

I had my exhaust guy swap in the large Magnaflow for the FlowMaster 50 Deltaflow. He was surprised that the straight-thru magnaflow was NOT louder than the baffled FM. I was pleased to find it quieter, especially at idle and ~65-70mph. There is still some resonance around 45-55mph and under load, but it's definitely more tolerable overall. I think i can live with it now...

cheers!
