The early engines used a timing set that's "straight up". The EFI engines also used a timing set that was not retarded. The difference is on the crank gear and it is easy to see by eye. The dot on the lower gear is directly in line with the keyway. On the retarded(8 crank degrees) set the dot is noticeably offset. You could move the crank backward or the cam forward and it would do the same thing. Swapping this makes a real difference in idle quality and overall low speed performance.
