Angry Ford now owns Kia?

I went to my local stealership today to get some friction modifier for my rear differential, as well as maybe catch a closeup of the new F-150.

Imagine my surprise upon entering the parking lot and seeing a whole nest of Kias - they were all there - Rios, Spectras, the whole gamut. I'm not talking about five or six - this was a genuine cadre of Kias.

So I proceed into the parts area, and ask the parts guy (this guy's really cool, BTW) if there was a wrong delivery, motioning outside at the mob of kias nesting in the lot. He says " Man, all I know is we're apparently selling and servicing them..." I was like "no way". He goes "Yep."

I told him that I hope they've got some 4 foot tall mechanics with tiny little hands to work on those econo boxes - he almost passed out laughing.

On the plus side, I got to see the '04 F150 close up for the first time - it's awesome. I want one.

Privately owned dealerships can have multiple car makes under one roof.

Ford did own a part of KIA up until a year or two ago. I believe they sold their stake to Hyundai. As Rob mentions, a dealer can sell more than one line if they choose.

I guess I never thought about that - I've seen different dealerships with the same name (Tate Chevrolet and Tate BMW) but I've never seen two different makes under the same roof.

While we're on the discussion, why Kia? If I was as wildly successful as the Koons family (Koons Ford), I'd sell Hondas or Toyotas and make some real money!

If the distributorship for the area is already sold, you take what you can get. Its not uncommon here in Kansas for multiple dealerships to be under the same roof Ford/Mazda/Kia, Dodge/Toyota, and Chevy/Mitsubishi(sp?) seem to be common combinations. Honda seems to demand (could be wrong) that their cars not share lots with other dealers.

Think of it like a 7-11. When new they only sell regular convience store items, but once it sells to a foreigner, they sell a little of everytrhing because they want that all-mighty-dollar.

The dealerships selling several brands like to corner the market. "If your going to buy a car, we have what you need"

We have a local dealership that, although scattered among several buildings along our "main drag," has the following:

Buick, Olds, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Nissan, Volkswagen, Toyota, Lexus, Infiniti, Kia, Isuzu, Saab-

and he's looking to buy a Ford dealer, too!

We have a place a few miles away that sells Ford, lincoln, mercury, and chevy, pontiac, and buick. Their slogan is "We've got it all" and they're just about right.
