Intermittent Fuel Flow

My 1995 F350, crew cab, 2WD, 460 automatic just developed a new problem. For the past year I have only used the front tank because someone slit the rubber filler neck hose to the back tank to steal my gas, and I have not replaced the hose yet. The truck normally starts immediately. For a few weeks now, sometimes the truck will not start, and I have discovered that if I momentarily flip the fuel tank selector switch from front tank to rear tank and back, and then try to start the truck, it starts. Every time. And this past week twice the truck seemed like it ran out of gas while I was driving it. I coasted to a stop, flipped the switch as I just described, and suddenly I had gas again. I have not looked into this yet, and can't decide if most likely culprit is the switch, the fuel pump, or maybe connecting wiring. Anybody else experience this? I suspect yes because my son has a 1994 F250 and is having the same issue.

If fiddling with the switch reliably resolves the problem, then yeah, my money's on the switch. IIRC the switch in my dad's '87 took standard spade connectors, would probably be easy enough to make up some jumpers to bypass the switch and see if the issue stays gone.

I just went thru a similar issue with my 87 5.0L auto f150...when it would die, I had to give the high pressure fuel pump a brogan adjustment to get it to start back
up. This occurred when driving over rough roads. So I figured loose wiring. Sure enough, one of the spade connectors to that high pressure pump was very loose.
I crimped the end of the female end so it had more bite when I pushed it back on. Seems to have resolved it.

These problems are usually solved with a new fuel pump switch.

I experienced this years ago. I dissembled the switch and cleaned up the contacts. It's been working ever since. I've also picked them up at the junkyard when I see one, just to keep as spares.

Thanks everyone for the input. I will update this after I have corrected the problem. I suspect the approach will be 1) Check all the connectors I can find, and if necessary 2) take the switch apart and clean it.
