Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and was looking for answers to something that I am confused about.
I own a 2019 F-450 Limited. I bought it used with only 3000 miles on it. The previous owner obviously never drove it.
It has about 75K miles on it now and during my latest maintenance I decided to replace the fan belt. Now this is my fault, but instead of actually going and looking at the truck first hand I did research online to find out if it should have a single alternator or a dual setup. EVERYTHING I saw said that all Limiteds came standard with the dual 332 amp alternator setup. So I went and got the belt. After that I decided to look at the truck and found out that it has only one 220 amp alternator.
Can any one explain why my truck only has one alternator and not two when all of Fords model spec sheets for super duties say duals for a Limiteds. They state that for model years 2018, 2019, and I think 2020. I am not sure about the newer model years.
Any insight that anyone can give would be appreciated. Thanks
I looked at my 2019 sales brochure and it does not mention dual alternators as standard equipment on the Limited. The supplemental heater is an option on the Limited and, as Ltngdrvr wrote, it comes with dual alternators.
I have witnessed some very "interesting" ways to fix very low mileage trucks owned by self insured organizations (hence no insurance claims, no CarFax records), where the trucks sustain damage, and are sent to dealer only auction (title still in tact, and not salvaged, due to no insurance claim), are purchased by dealer flippers who have no storefront, fixed up very creatively with a mix of parts not necessarily for that specific trim level, and sold as low mileage creampuffs for a very tidy profit.
I'm not saying this is what happened with the OP's truck. I'm just saying that I have seen this happen, and had to pick up all the pieces of my mind that was blown. It is scary out there what people do now that the prices of these pickups exceeds 6 figures.
It is a diesel. I know because I have to put 13 quarts of oil in it every 7500 miles.
And what is posted above is exactly what I have been looking at. Everything points to duals being standard.
It would be a pretty hard thing to fake it with all the badging. The center console has the Limited numbering badge with the correct VIN. It was number 32. At first I thought that maybe since it was one of the first built that maybe it got a 2018 engine. But the 2018s also had duals as standard.
The funny thing is that when I went to the dealer to get the belt I asked for the dual alternator belt. When he looked it up and then cross referenced it with the VIN and it said that it had the single. I said "No No", it should have duals. When I got home I saw different and the dealer and VIN were correct as far as the engine goes.
Could it really be "oh, we don't have that engine today, lets use this one"? Or that someone on the line got it wrong and installed the wrong engine and then scanned the bar code so that the VIN was correct? I thought that they were past those kind of mistakes.
FYI, I bought it from a very large used car dealership in Ohio. It was hardly a year old when I bought it. Only 3000 miles. I think that I remember seeing that it was originally titled in Virginia. That is why it doesn't have the supplemental heater. Certain cold weather states would get it automatically if not a special order vehicle. (my understanding) I live in Michigan and wish that it did have it. That is about the only thing it doesn't have.
It was also my understanding that they all came with the 332 amp alternators, and then if it had the supplemental heater that they were bumped up to the 397 amp alternators.
Did you happen to check your original window sticker. I'm curious what that shows for the alternator(s). I believe there are websites that you can use to look up your original window sticker with a VIN if you do not have it.
I do have a copy of the window sticker and I did look at it. It does not mention anything about alternators but I figured that that was because they were supposed to be standard. There certainly is nothing mentioned about an alternator delete.
Doesn't look like it came from the factory with the dual alternators. Here's the section of my window sticker where the dual alternators are explicitly called out (last arrow).
