Water pump issue/question
About 12 years ago I had the original FORD water pump rebuilt.as part of the engine rebuild
Once installed the rebuilt pump immediately started leaking from the backplate....I uninstalled the rebuilt pump, removed the back plate, made a new gasket out of "the right Stuff" and reinstalled with no issues.
Fast forward 12 years and the old pump was leaking thru the weephole so I picked up a brand new Gates water pump.(even checked to make sure the back plate bolts were snug before installation)
Installed it today along with some new heater hoses and yup.......leaking from the back plate-WTF !!!
I'm ticked off I wasted 3 hours and too tired to go after it again tonight but I am wondering If this is an installation issue. i.e am I doing something wrong or not doing something I should be doing.
Anyone else run into this leaking backplate issue?
Thanks for listing to my rant.
UPDATE: I went back out and removed the new water pump: 35 minute job this time around for removal only.
Was definitely leaking from the rear cover.
I removed the cover and NONE of the 6 cover bolts had any sign of sealant on them. I picked up a Felpro 11758 gasket and added a thin film of "the right stuff" along with thread sealant on the six bolts.
Will let it cure overnight before I re-install the pump and will likely pressure test before I add any coolant.
UPDATE2:
All good after the sealing of the back cover bolts.I suggest anyone using a Gates water pump in the future at minimum check the back cover bolts for sealant unless you like doing the job twice.
Wasn't very impressed by the gasket that Gates had in there either, it was substantially thicker the the replacement Felpro I used.
