My 2011 F350 6.7L diesel just had a weird transmission issue. I was driving home and felt a pop in the transmission and then the engine revved. I pulled over and looked down to see only 1st and 2nd gears showing on the dash. I gave it a little gas and sure enough I couldn't go past 2nd gear. I was less than half a mile from home and made it in second. The check transmission light never came on and the truck never registered a warning on the dash (like "transmission faulty" or whatever).
So when I got home, I turned the truck off and then back on. Sure enough it showed all the gears. See before and after pics below.
Does your truck have the +/- buttons on the shifter? I haven't had a diesel as new as yours but I did have a 2011 F-150, that behavior is identical to what would happen if you pushed the - button on the gear shift a few times on the F-150. This is only a guess, hopefully someone who knows the answer for sure will come along.
