A/C cycling?

Hey all, I have a question about my a/c unit. For some reason the clutch on the compressor unit engages and disengages no matter what I have the dash switch set to. (heater, a/c, or off) Is this normal? There is a loud click sound when it does it, and the rpms drop off. Any ideas would really help. Thanks.

First thing you have to do is put a set of gauges on the system and check the freon level. That's your starting point. What you're describing, is a system low on freon, but other things could cause the cycling.

On that truck, the A/C clutch should NOT engage when the mode control is set to Off, or Vent, or Heat. The compressor clutch's power is routed through the dash switch, and the Cycling Pressure Switch screwed into the side of the Accumulator. The CPS shouldn't be seeing power in those 3 modes.

You may need a wiring diagram to check out the mode switch. That is, unless the truck is new to you. In that case, someone may have hard-wired around the mode switch to solve an open circuit problem they couldn't find or fix properly.
