It is the title that makes that truck a good deal. As long as there is not too much rust and the frame and body are salvageable, it is a good deal.
Yeah, but Whitefish, MT? That's like the middle of no where. Seattle or Portland maybe? Still a tow over the mountains. Have to wait a few months for the snow to melt before even thinking about it...
Whitefish is not a bad run. All of the main roads are plowed with deicer (no salt). Once you get to Missoula then it is Interstate.
Weather is starting to break for spring time.
Photo (just taken) of the south side of Missoula, temp in the mid 40's today.
Doesn't get much better.
That is beautiful country up there. I go through there every year when the weather is nice. I would think about that truck but I already have a couple projects going.
It's beautiful about 2 days a week with spring on the way. The rest is overcast.
I'd like to have that truck, also. This F250 has kept me busy through the winter and today I was rewiring my trailer that goes with it.
Those projects have depleted my budget for a while.
~10 years ago I was driving my '56 F100 daily, and I wanted A/C and the ability to go 80mph, so I decided to start looking for a modern economy car; the cars I was looking at tended to be priced between $750-1300. cheapo.
You would not believe the statistics....I bet HALF of those ads said "no title, bill of sale only" I live in CA and it takes a not-very-quick call to the DMV to make it clear that it is not legal and therefore not possible to title a car in your name without the current owners signed title in hand. In CA, Bills of sale mean NOTHING.
Still to this day it is alarming how many people try selling their cars without a title.

You bring up some really good points, especially for those who want to start a truck project.
In the legal profession there is an old saying that you can indict a ham sandwich. In some states, you can get a title for that same ham sandwich. In other states, they will actually do an in depth inspection of vehicles. Until a few years ago, my state would do a detailed inspections of all out of state vehicles being titled there.
We have it pretty good here in Maine. Anyone can buy or sell a vehicle over 25 years old without a title. All you need is a simple bill of sale, which could be written on a McDonald's cheeseburger wrapper, and bam, you have a registered vehicle in your name. Then to register it as an antique for the very cheap annual fee, you have to sign an affadavit that says you will not drive it as a primary vehicle. If you want to drive it as a primary vehicle you simply pay the higher annual 'regular' plate fee.
This state does not get wound up about previous ownership or VIN numbers. They collect the sales tax and let you drive old vehicles freely.
The hard part is that the good, solid low-rust cars and trucks from elsewhere that don't have titles will cost an arm and a leg to ship them here. But we can make room for the ones that do find their way to Maine.
