I was talking with a freind the other day ( under the hood 0f his 64 Merc pickup) and as we were discussing his 292 the subject turned to identifying the 312 from the 292 and 272. He said the 312 has the distributor on the front of the engine as opposed to the other two being on the rear. Is this right? I am thinking back , way back, and I didn,t think that there was much physical difference between these motors. Can someone put us straight.
No. The distributor on ALL Y-Blocks is at the rear and angled towards the passenger side. The biggest clue on the 312 version is that it came with a 4-barrel carb from the factory. However I'm fairly certain the intake manifold will interchange so somebody could have slipped a 4-bbl. on a 272 or 292. But if it's orriginal, all 312's were 4-bbl and all 272 and 292s wer 2-bbl. Also, a 312 never came from the factory in a truck; only in cars.
If the distributor is in the front you've got a 260, 289,302, 351, 352, 360, 390, 400, 406, 427, 428, (or probably several other Ford engines I missed.) If the distributor is in the rear, and sticking straight-up, You've got a cotton- picken Chevvy!
There have been many documented cases of the 312 in trucks and with a 2bbl from the factory.
.
Seems that in 63-4 Ford was cleaning out old replacement engine inventory and selling them as 292's. You have to remember the Ford motto, "nothing ever gets thrown away".
I've never encountered a 312 in a truck nor have ever seen any literature advertising a 312 in a truck, BUT I am quite familiar with
Ford's "never throw anything away" policy. I could definately believe that they could, or would do this. After all, who would gripe if they ordered a 292 and got a 312?
