1984 F150 4.6L Starting Problem

I recently bought this truck and replaced the plugs and wires. When I went to start it, I had to lift the coil wire out of the distributor cap before it would run. Since then I have replaced the distributor w/ modulator, rotor and cap and the ignition coil all with the same results. The engine will start and run with the coil wire slightly pulled out of the cap, but dies when I press it onto the cap. I'm at wits end trying to figure this problem out and would appreciate any and all suggestions.

How did you get the 4.6L in an 84?
The 4.6L never has a distributor.
Could it be a 4.9L 6cyl. perhaps?

I am wondering if the pick-up coil in the distributor is going bad?
