Tire Wear
I am new to the Diesel club and am going to have some questions from time to time for you guys. I have already learned a lot from reading through these forums. I recently bought an F350 Crew Cab Lariat PSD with 50,000 miles on it. The rear tires are alomst twice as worn as the front tires and the spare tire is almost totally worn. My question is should I rotate the tires from front to back to let the tires catch up to each other or is it possbile the previous owner has already done that? From the looks of the tires, his tire rotating was not done very often. I would like to get as many miles from these tires as I can before upgrading to a little bigger tire, like maybe a 285? Is it possible this is the 2nd set of tires on this truck already? (They are Firestone Steeltex 265/75/16 and spare tire is worn down to nothing) Does the front wear faster than the back? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It's not unusual for the rear tires to wear more quickly than the fronts on your Super Duty. The best way to deal with this is to frequently rotate them - make sure you cross them to the rear. You should be able to run them for a little longer that way.

I have 70k on my truck and I'm on the second set of tires. The first were steeltex, and now I'm running BFG AT's. Bot sets showed the same wear you talked about. I've questioned the uneven wear already and a good friend of mine who is a truck driver mentioned that it may have to do with the strong torque of the powerstroke engines. In the heavy truck industry higher HP trucks tend to wear drive tires faster than low HP trucks. Also are you running a limited slip rear? That will definatly contribute to tire wear.

I'm running the stock Firestone Steeltex 265/75 R16 tires and have 38,000 on them with about another 15,000 left. The tires are wearing great and they all look the same. I rotate them religiously every 5000 miles, rear tires straight forward, front tires crossed to the rear. I run 67psi in all of them whether I'm towing or not.

my 2 cents, usually the weight of the engine that cause the tires to where fast on the fronts, it the rear is wearing faster, is it in the center? if so lets some air out of the tire, best thing to do is grab some chalk, put a line across the tire tread up the sidewall, so you know where the line is, drive a few blocks look to see where the chalk is remaining, if there is more in the middle, tire is too low, if there is less in middle than outer edges, too high. I run (unloaded, as most of my driving is) 40 PSI in the front, due to weight of engine, and 34 in back. When I am going to tow or haul, they all go to 65, I am pushing 25K on this set and still have over 65% tread left. Now if you like to spin the tires whenever a chevy is around, well enough said, keep up the good work

My truck came with Steeltex and they gave me about 40K before being replaced. Since then I've tried Michelin LTX's, Goodyear Wranglers, Deltas, and none of them have given much over 30K miles regardless of tire pressure, loads, rotations, etc. I envy you guys that are getting over 40K miles.
