Rear diff speed sensor bolt - what is the thread??
Currently working on changing the rear diff speed sensor on my 2000 F-250 7.3. I was able to remove the bolt with a 3/8" socket (10mm would not fit tightly), but rounded off the head in the process. I have tried replacing the bolt with both an M8-1.25 and a 5/16"-18 x 1" bolt - neither of them seem to be the right thread although the original bolt fits a 5/16-18 nut properly. Was the original bolt some kind of oddball metric thread?
I have just disassembled a 2000 rear axle and have used various taps and dies to chase threads prior to reassembly. I've found a mixture of metric and SAE threads and socket sizes, and even National Pipe Threads (3/8-18 NPT) on the fill plug. The ring gear bolts on the early 10.5 differential are 1/2-20 SAE. I think the bolts used depended on who supplied the parts and how recently tooling was changed, etc.
Some of the metric bolts are very close to SAE dimensions, such as the axle-to-hub bolts. If you are chasing threads with a tap or die, your tap/die should NOT be cutting away any metal!
I suspect the VSS bolt is metric, but I'll check mine today and let you know. It is out and I have thread gauges, taps and dies for both metric and SAE threads, I will not be able to post the results until noon or so....
It is definitely M8-1.25 or 5/16"-18 x 1" bolt. If memory serves me, my 99 had the 5/16. I have read where some folks swear it is the M8. Can you look at your original bolt and see if there are hash marks (SAE) or if it has 8.8 or 10.9 on the head, then M8.
if you have 3 hash marks then it is 5/16-18. As mentioned above, it is NOT oddball. Use a tap to clean it up.
