I've got a '75 f-250 with a 390 and I just pulled the intake manifold off my to stop a long time oil leak, I took the carb off the intake to clean things up abit. I got everyhting back together and the truck idles okay but soon as I push on the trottle it just bogs down and basically chokes itself out. I don't have any info. on this type of carb for setting it up. Any suggestions would be great. Oh by the way the carb is a Carter AFB 4-barrel.
It sounds from your description like the accelerator pump is not functioning. With the motor off and the air filter removed move the throttle from closed to open about half way while looking down the front throat of the carb. You should see a good stream of gas. If there isn’t any gas then the accelerator pump is not operating. Check that the linkage rod is attached and if so then replacing the pump will probably fix the problem.
I got things working okay. it looked to be some sticking in the linkage. There was gas getting into the card but it looked like the butterflies weren't opening. Things are still a little sticky so I think a good cleaning is in order. The distributor was off as well so I will check the timing.
