Need some diagnosing help before I pull my tranny, any and all input is appreciated.
as the title says my trans is slipping in 4th gear locked. It doesn’t do it first thing in the morning when it’s cold but once it gets warmed up it slips In 4th gear locked in pretty much any condition except flat road or downhill. As soon as I apply acceleration amount of torque without downshifting it slips when hot basically. After reading https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-problems.html this entire thread I’m convinced my TC is smoked and/or for some reason my trans cooler is plugged up for some reason.
Other Symptoms: I have blown my speedometer fuse twice in the past week. My trans fluid burns my fingers at operations temp vs being normal hot (doesn’t burn your skin). Truck seems to go in reverse harder than usual but not every time.
these symptoms may be separate issues but thought we’re worth mentioning.
The first step is to read the codes. Without codes all anyone can do is guess. If I knew anything about what truck you have I could tell you how to read the codes.
I should’ve known better than to leave that info out lol. It’s a 94 f150 4x4 351w e4od 3.55 final drive 270k Odo now.
motor is rebuilt with gt40p heads and cam. Trans was replaced by the FORD DEALER at 200k odo. Trans has all the 4r100 updates including F5 pump. I did not replace the TC with the trans rebuild given it was still relatively low miles. It also has transgo HD tugger VB kit and transgo or TCI shift kit (can’t remember which).
If it was throwing codes wouldn’t my overdrive off light be flashing??
Ok I read the codes the under the hood. I got the following. a few emissions codes (no concern I have no emissions components still installed), 628 excessive converter clutch slippage. Fitting. 212 IAT was/is high or open, 212 Ignition TACH signal was erratic (module/wiring) or SPOUT circuit fault – Ignition Systems.
212 (M) Ignition TACH signal was erratic (module/wiring) or SPOUT circuit fault - Ignition Systems
Both of your codes are in memory which are shown automatically when the KOEO test is completed. Memory means they are not currently active but have been at some point. You should run your test again and when the codes are being read turn your reader off or remove your jumper. This will clear codes and you can start fresh. Engine should be at operating temperature when testing. Have you run KOER codes? If so they should always be run after KOEO codes have been addressed. Mark should be able to help after you do this.
Code 212 on a 1994 and later F-series truck is typically cause by having a gray colored Push-Start Ignition Control Module (ICM). That will not cause your transmission issue.
I have an update on my trans issue if anyone has suggestions. Been driving it. It stopped “slipping” in OD when hot. This was most definitely just the converter not locking for some reason *couch* TC solenoid? Some days it drive perfect some days it shifts funny some days it locks the converter in 2nd and 1 St gear or way too early or shifts up way too early some days it idles high as heaven some days it will do all of the above and I’ll pull over turn it off and fire it back up and it’s perfect again. But most of the time it drives good.
I have read the codes multiple times.
ALL the pertaining engine off codes are: 113- IAT high open or grounded, 122 TPS, 452 VSS erratic, 212 erratic TACH
ALL the pertaining engine Running codes are : 213 ign spout or SAW open or shorted.
Good to know. I specifically didn’t add this in my last post but immediately after posting I put a new TPS and VSS on the truck and double checked my neutral safety switch was adjusted properly. It was. Drives perfect now just like it’s supposed to. Hopefully this is the last of my shift issues. I appreciate all the input you guys give me
