Shaky Steering Wheel

Didn't know if the hub moving around and thus allowing the steering wheel to also move around is normal or not. So I thought, I'd ask. Doesn't allow the steering wheel to be rocked to an unsafe degree, just a bothersome one.

Let me know if there is anything that can be done to alleviate this:

Cheers,

Geoff

Just the steering wheel rocking then need to tighten down the nut that holds it onto the shaft.
The whole shaft rocking then need to tighten up the shaft bearings or get new ones?

Your shaft is VERY loose. As said it could be worn out bearings (not uncommon on trucks of this age) or it could just need some adjusting.
From my standpoint something sounded "dry" in the video. Might be time to pull things apart a little deeper and get to the bearings to re-lube them after a good inspection and cleaning.
if they're worn out it's easy to find new ones. The old ones were like bicycle crank bearings. Ball bearings caged in a plastic carrier. One upper and one lower usually.

Down at the bottom of the column, inside the engine compartment, where the shaft comes out you should find a clamp sleeve that acts as both an inner race for the lower bearing and a tensioner.
If yours has slipped down some, it leaves everything loose. Can you move the shaft up and down along the axis too? Or does it just rock side to side like in the video?
If you scroll down this page (https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/catego...k_Column_Parts) you'll find all the usual suspects for a Bronco. Depending on the year of your truck many of the parts interchange. Unfortunately i don't know if they all do or not, but you can see what you have inside yours at least and compare.
The inner shaft size of the pickup should be 3/4" too, just like the Bronco and most other Ford trucks up to at least '79 and probably right up until they started making exotic tilt columns with every control configuration known to man. Afte that all bets are off!

Anyway, check for that clamp to see if it has slipped.

Good luck.

Paul

The thread size is different on a 68 or so Bronco from a 71 F100 steering wheel. I tried to buy a Bronco steering wheel & my 71 steering wheel was bigger & the threaderd opening of the steering wheel was bigger than the Bronco.........

Thanks for your comments! It would seem that with that much side-to-side movement, that some kind of bearing around the shaft is needed/missing. Just don't know how the bearing and the shaft sleeve, which are the parts I assume I need, interface with each other and do I need to take everything apart to install them, or just slip them over the end of the shaft and knock them into the column.

Paul: there is only side to side movement - nothing in and out.
