Gear ratio question

Have 1994 Ford F-150 with 33” tires and 3:55 gear ratio. Thinking about installing lower gears maybe 3:73 or 4:10 gears. What would you recommend. Thx

Going from 3.55 to 3.73 you'd barely notice a difference. If you're going to change the gears, go to 4.11

4.10 works pretty well. I wouldn't even consider 3.73.

Has the speedo been recalibrated?
How is the truck used?
4.10 would be the way to go if you want more performance or better towing, but if you're just driving it around it's probably not really necessary.
If this was a 5.0 truck or it had 3.08 gears my advive would be yes definitely go to 4.10s.

Sharp looking truck! Are you at elevation? The background makes me think you might be.

Leave it with the 3.55s since you don't do much towing or hauling. Raise line pressure etc in the trans. Drive the thing.

Or go 4.10s but 3.73 will be a waste of time and money.

For 33s I would go with 4.10. The 3.73 would be good for 31s.

I say 4.56:1. These are undergeared and underpowered stock anyway.

For reference I run a 4.10:1 with a little 275/60R15 on my 88.

That's what I would like in my truck (4.56, where I went 4.10), but I do haul, four wheel, occasionally tow, and am at high elevation (7200'+) most of the time so the 4.10's a little tall still.
I think considering the use case here, I'd either leave it at 3.55 or go to 4.10. If leaving it, maybe do some mild engine upgrades (heads & long tube headers). 1.7 ratio roller rockers to get a little more area under the curve on valve lift wouldn't hurt either. I thought my truck ran really well cruising down the highway with the engine updates, 33" tires, and 3.55 gears when empty.

Btw, a quick & dirty way to get 4.10's up front is to pick up a D50 center chunk out of an F-250 with 4.10's at the junk yard. It bolts right in place. Same front drive shaft U-joint, same axle shafts. No gear setup required. Then buy Ford Racing 4.10 ring & pinion for the 8.8" rear, re-use the original pinion depth shim, adjust backlash to spec, and you'll likely be dang close on gear pattern.

I'm not sure if this a gas vs. diesel thing.... But a friend got the 7.3 with 3.55 gears and wishes he got the 3.73. Fuel mileage aside (besides - do we REALLY care as long as we can drive differently gain or loos MPGs?) his logic is that if he had gotten the 3.73s he would have gained an extra gear. I think the logic is like: he mostly has to tow in 9th or 8th gear (and this is in the east). If he had the 3.73 then he could be in 10th or 9th. So effectively he would gained a gear. I'm not sure I understand all that logic (or gearing) but it made sense to him and sort of made sense to me.

8th, 9th, 10th, all your doing is moving where the RPM's are, in the new 10 speed auto's, it really hurts our trucks only having, 4 speeds, its a big hit in RPM's, is the difference in 4.10, 4.56, or 3.73, 3.55, 3.08.
