Have 86 need earlier carb and distributer swap???????

I have a 86 carbureated 300 and the carb is apiece of crap. The engine is shot but I have a good 300 that is a 73. I wish to convert back to a earlier carb without all the extra stuff Ford put on the 86. I have a early intake and the distributer but need to know what carb is the best from the mid 70's up? What else would you recommend? My distributer has three wires (Purple orange and black) going to it and I have no idea what kind of box to put with it. Any ideas?

Ford ignition modules are identified by color of the wire grommet. The one you need will be blue. Duraspark II Electronic Ignition

Thanks,

I did a bunch of searches and came up with using the HEI module that is cheap and easy to wire. Any downside to this as long as I don't let the truck know it is a GM part?
