Question crankshaft pulley :(

here is the problem i am having ..i have a 1985 econoline 250 with a 6cyl. i was on the way to work last week and the engine died on me on the expressway. now i turn the igniton over and the engine sounds like the starter is turning over trying to start the engine but there is no compresion. i took off the distributor cap and turned the engine over and the rotor does not move ..so i was told this may be a fiber gear that is gone bad ?? i am having trouble getting the crankshaft pulley bolt out how do i do this is it reverse thread and how do i keep the engine from turning over while cranking on the bolt..... this is my first time trying to do this and any information or tips would be great.

from the information youve given, the rotor isnt turngin adn theres no compression, i would have to believe that teh camshaft isnt turning. the only thing that causes this is broken timing chain. if its only that the distributor isnt turning and you do have compression chasing that grear is the way to go.but since the distributor is drivin off the cam if your cam isnt moving the distributor isnt either, nor is the oilpump.

the fiber gear is your timinig gear they wear out unfortunately now all that worn off gear is in your oil pan were it can be picked up by your oil pump and will usually just sieze your pump so it must be cleaned out the cheap way is to flush the pan out when the timing cover is off with with solvent then changing oil after the first 10-15 minutes including a filter the rightway is to remove the pan, after you get the gear back on do a compression check to see if any valves got bent
