2002 7.3 F350 zf6 205,000 miles
. I had a 2001 7.3 that I had to replace the motor on because ( according to the diesel shop) it had a weak fuel pump which starved the last cylinder and burnt it up. They said a regulated return system would prevent that from happening in the future.
So now I have a new 7.3 with low miles and I want to do everything I can to make it last. My question is will an easier to install and cheaper FRx system do the same job of preventing a starved cylinder at the end of the head. Or do I need to go with a full on regulated return system. Or will neither of them prevent this sort of catastrophic failure? I welcome your input and opinions.
Google ”can diesel engines be damaged by running lean” then find a new ”shop”, or better yet hang around here long enough and become your own mechanic. Remember ”fear is the mind killer”. Sorry had to do it, seriously how often do you get to bust out a Dune quote. To answer your question, loads of folks here are running the frx and I'm pretty sure most are more than happy with the results. I went diy regulated return with an in tank pump and am pleased with it's performance. Hard to suck air when the pump is swimming in diesel. So truthfully I don't think you could go wrong either way. Good luck and keep us posted.

The logic of this doesn't make sense; if a weak fuel pump was the cause how would a regulated return help? Regardless, think of this: why didn't the last cylinder on the other head suffer a similar fate?
I don't even know what "Dune" is, but that quote... "Fear is the mind killer", is now forever in my lexicon.
Dune is what Star Wars would have been if it were written by Stephen King. Frank Herbert, one dude's brain I might legitimately be afraid to take a stroll in. Now that I think of it, Stephen King probably makes that list too.
That poor poor truck. It never gets to go out and play. I'm just picturing bunches of sad puppy dog eyes while that Sarah McLachlan song plays in the background.

Reason: add quote
I don't have or intend to get an FRx or regulated return, but I see no problems with someone else who wants to run either on their vehicle.
Been running H/H mods for years and a lot of cross country miles towing heavy. I am grateful for the added fuel capacity, quieter idle and non-puking fill neck.
To each their own.
As for Dune... I thought the new version was a great start to the story. I think the Star Wars comparison above was accurate.

That was definitely a comparison I heard floating around the theatre when I saw it; "this must have been what it was like to see Star Wars when it came out".

The new Dune movie perhaps. The old Dune movie where the Harkonnens had drain plugs on their chests was super campy.
