I'm rocking a Hypertech 42500 programmer right now on my Excursion 7.3 powerstroke that has 220k miles on it.
Stage 3 right now. The 3 to 4th gear switch is a bit harsh, don't like that. I havent used the Stage 1 or 2 never, so i don't know how it behaves with those stages.
Also overboost code will turn on the engine light when accelerating hard.
I got my hands on a Edge EEF1000 programmer for super cheap. Still haven't used it.
Damn.. Where i can get hands on for it? Do you know if they have it in Finland?
Any info for that, if i put my truck to stock with the Hypertech programmer. Is it safe to try the Edge one?
I looked some info and read that the Edge somehow managed to f up the ECU and some storys ended up in a Dealer and rewriting the ECU..
Any confirmation for that?
As The Finlander recommends, the PHP Hydra is the best chip available on the market. You will need to work with a seller to have it shipped International, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I would start with Matt at @Bitterroot Diesel or Clay at @Riffraff Performance . If neither one of those gentlemen are able to help you out, we can get you a list of others.
Worst case scenario is you have the Hydra sent to an FTE'r and then we could send it to you international shipping.
Okay, i will defenetly try to flash to Stock with the Hypertech and then will try the Edge programmer, see if the gear changes change or not.
The guy who owned the Edge told, that the programmer lowered the average fuel consumption significantly.
I know that Hydra is better. Thats an extra 600€ for me to get it here. Technical condition is no1 thing for me right now. I will think about the Hydra sometime later! :P
So i played with the tuners today.
Connected the Hypertech and tuned the truck back to Stock.
Connected the Edge to choose the tune. Tells me that i need to make my truck back to stock.
Question for it now. Did the Hypertech lock my ECU and i can't make any adjustments?
Took out the Hypertech again and chose the Stage 3, works... Edge won't let even start the tune...
The previous owner didn't have the truck anymore so thats why he sold it to me. I didn't have any idea that maybe it could be VIN locked.
Flash tuners ‘lock’ to a VIN to prevent someone from tuning a hundred trucks with the same tuner. The tuner will remain locked until you use it to “return to stock” like you did with the Hyperflash unit.
Since you have import fees and crazy shipping costs, it may be worth an email to Edge to see if they can unlock the one you have in hand. SCT will do that for their tuner for a fee. The fee wasn’t cheap but was cheaper than a new tuner. Not sure if it’s worth it for an Edge tune on the 7.3 though. My thought here is there is no import or shipping for an emailed unlock.
Ultimately a Hydra is the best option. But I know it costs a lot to get to your end of the world.
edit: of course we don’t know that it’s VIN locked, just a guess. You would want to find out how to confirm before paying Edge for an unlock.
Just a thought... Occasionally a Hydra will show up in the FTE Classifieds section. You may be able to find a cheaper deal if the seller is OK with international shipping. I am not sure how fees/taxes would be different if at all, but there may still be hope if that is the end goal and the Edge device doesn't work out.
