I was given a 239 for parts and cannot find the year. I was told that the numbers and letters on the rear passenger side of the engine identify it. It has F35:4. Can anyone tell me anything about this engine? Thanks in advance for the help.
The 59AB and the 8BA flatheads were both made in the 239 size, so that is another question, if it's a flathead. Best to post some pictures of what you have. AFAIK, casting numbers on flathead blocks are just mold or foundry marks. I've never seen anything that is an actual identifier.
There are some (mostly pre-'50 I think) blocks that have a "born on" date stamped onto the passenger side rear of the intake surface. I haven't seen one yet in person, just random markings. Here is a decoder for the ones that have the factory marks: birthday
The OP's numbers don't decode properly. As said, pictures would help, details of the distributor, etc. Really without a teardown it is not definitive, and even then it could have parts from a couple of engines.
Intake off, look at shelf in valve chamber by fuel pump rod bore. You should see 8BA 48-49, not sure if there is an 0BA, but there is a 1BA, 51-53. I'm looking at one now with a loaded missed. Got guide driven down and unlocked, but doesn't want to come out. Have it soaking , waiting for the spring to launch it.
