Battery tray modification

1977 f250 ranger with a 460. I have a good battery laying around, the tray is wide enough for it to fit in the tray, but is an inch longer than the tray. Could I just make 2 slits on each side of the tray lip and bend it down and have the battery hang off 3/4 an inch? I’m not by the truck right now so can’t look or find any good pictures online. Is there room for me to let the battery hang off on one side? Even if I have to pull the tray and weld a little extension piece on? Thx guys

I just put a piece of plywood the size of the tray, and the longer battery sit on top of it and hung over the end of the tray. I think it was about 1/2 inch thick.

Those edges that contain the battery work in conjunction with the hold-down hardware to prevent the battery from moving and possibly causing damage. You can get by using only the hold-down hardware if it is tight but avoiding those edges reduces one's safety margin. Ultimately, it gets down to how and where you drive. Highway cruising has risks but off-roading is substantially riskier. Life is a never ending risk management task.
