So I'm finally at a point where I'm going to order up a PiMPx for my '87, It started life as a 4.9/C6 4wd Truck, and it's now currently a 4.9/AOD 4WD. So obviously, I can run the truck with just the standard PiMPx.
I just have two basic questions, at this point, for some of you guys that have done these before.
A) I can see a potential circumstance in the future, where the AOD could come out, and an E4OD, 4R70W or AOD-E might go back in (not *super* likely, but it could happen), so is the base PiMPx "upgradable" to a PiMPxshift (if it requires sending the unit back to stinger to have the upgrade done, that's fine), or am I better off just buying a PiMPxshift in the first place?
B) On a 4.9, is there any compelling reason, other than to say I've done it, to figure out converting from Batch to Sequential fire (if it's even something possible with the 4.9), for a daily driver sort of truck, with mild off-road use? i.e. Buying a PiMPxs vs PiMPx
I've been running my PimpX on my daily driver '91 F150 with 5.8L and M5OD for a little over a year now. I'm very happy with it. I'm running the base model PimpX.
A) You would need to ask Stinger about this to be sure, but I think I've seen posts on their forum where people have asked this and they said that you would send in your old unit and they would give you credit towards the upgraded ECU you were wanting to purchase.
There's a BIG price difference between the base model PimpX and the PimpXShift (I think about $400), so unless you have definite plans to go to the electronically controlled transmission I would probably just stay with the base model. Also, the base model doesn't require you to move any wires on the ECU connector... I think the PimpXs and PimpXShift do.
B) Mine's not a 4.9L, but I'm very happy with the batch fire on my 5.8L... I don't see a reason to switch to sequential fire, but others may chime in with valid reasons.
Log in to Stinger performance, check their tech section, see how well they are responding to questions asked, because it is DIY, and not for the faint of heart, or the computer neophyte(like myself) Tweecer, or Quarterhorse is another route(again, it is DIY, and not for the faint of heart,) if your good with computers, half price of pimp, and then you could go US shift #2 ($500) extra if you want to go E4OD, instead of $600 more to go pimpxshift from pimp(1399-799=600), lots of youtube on Tweecer, Quarterhorse, or pimpx, there's noone in my area to help, the one dyno shop closed down, and now dry clean buisness, if I get side tracked, or I'd do pimpxshift,
I'm plenty computer savvy, and have hand soldered MS1 and MS2 boards and done custom EFI work before for previous projects. I'm not even remotely worried about that. I just very much find the price point of the PiMPx to be right where it's on the edge of my time being worth more than getting all the bits and putting it together myself, rather than having Stinger put one together that plugs right into the factory wiring, and goes right where the factory ECM lives.
And my hands shake now, so I *really* don't feel like dealing with soldering a whole board together.
The tech forum on Stingers site is top notch. You can upload your tune and Shannon or one of the other techs can usually tell you if you have something drastically wrong, or will make suggestions on improvements. I had to get their help when I was setting up my '94, because I could not get the thing to idle with the rowdy cam that is in it. They had me steered in the right direction within a day.
It isn't worth the hassle for sequential injection unless you intend to install individual O2 bungs in each exhaust port and tune it that way. Not necessary unless you're looking for super high performance.
I would make the decision now as to whether or not you ever plan to use an electronically controlled trans. If it's pretty unlikely that you will go through the hassle of swapping, just get the PimpX. Like was said above, I know guys have sent their PimpX back in and swapped for an XShift and gotten credit back for the PimpX unit if for some reason you do swap in the future.
