Are you planning for a carb? Make sure if you do the swap you keep all of your accessories and the serpentine belt. 89's have 2 intake low psi pumps and one hipsi pump, if you run a carb you will have to lose the hi psi pump

I think the only trans I have seen in 79-91 LTD/Crown Vic is the AOD. This is a non-electronic 4 speed incl. overdrive. For the early years, a TV rod went from throttle linkage down to trans to adjust working pressure. Became a cable on later ones. These AOD's have two "D's" on the shift quadrant. One D position allows O/D use. The other D doesn't, turns it into a 3speed, 3rd is 1:1.
Never heard of an A4OD. E4OD, yes, a heavier duty trans for trucks. 351 and up used the E4OD for the 4 speed auto.

You could get a E40d in a smaller engine, like the 300 or the 302, from 1990-on...My 1993 has one mated to a 302.

It's my understanding that the Aod goes from second to fourth skipping the 3rd gear in Od functions. Also it has a taller Od gear than the E40d did/does.

I would choose the C-6 if you don't need/want Od. It's practically indistructable, although I would advise a cooler, We had several that would get the fluid hot and thin quickly without a cooler.
