I have a '92 explorer with a 4.0L V6 with 187,500 miles. The mileage I'm getting is 12-13mpg in town, and 16 on the highway. My brother's explorer is getting 23 highway and 20 in town. Mine runs great, has plenty of power, more than most explorers, but the mileage sucks. Any suggestions?
I THINK that mine has 3.42 gears, I'll check next time I'm out there. The computer is not throwing anymore codes, so I'm lost. Some days I wish this thing had a carburetor on it...
It may be carbon buildup. You can try a bottle of Techron concentrate. I've heard it can clean up mild cases. My Ranger with 85K mi had a serious case of carbon buildup. The dealership charged about $90 to "decarbonize" the engine. It made a huge difference.
Motorcraft 5w-20 semi synthetic motor oil. Made to improve gas mileage...and it does.I don't know about engine protection but my ranger went from 18 mpg with 5w-30 to 22 mpg with the motorcraft 5w-20.
