I have a '68 F100 (360, 2wd) in which power steering was added (not by me) using the column/pump/Bendix gearbox from a '72 F100...
The setup works great other than the constant leaking from the gearbox's input/steering shaft seal.
I am no longer willing to put up with the leaking. Since it seems replacement seals or rebuilt boxes are rare, and I don't want to cut the steering shaft, I'm planning return to a manual system.
My question(s):
(1) Is a '68 (or compatible) manual gearbox a direct replacement with the '72 steering column?
(2) Is there a difference in the pitman arm?
If your box and column are from a 72, it is a Saginaw box. There are properly done rebuilt boxes available. Contact Red Head Steering or Blue Top Steering. You will be money ahead getting one of these boxes as they do machine work, and use better than factory seals and bearings.

Well, the box is definitely a Bendix. So much for the accuracy of the guy who installed it...
