K&N FIPK

I just ordered a K&N FIPK for my 1996 with a 4.9L. Is this such a modification that it would be of any benefit to disconnect the negative battery cable to allow the PCM to relearn the fuel settings?

I ordered the K&N from a store here in San Jose, CA for $138.49. In searching around, that seems to be a pretty good price. If anyone is interested it is model number 57-2510-1 and according to the K&N catalog is for the 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8 liter engines with factory mass air. Company name is "Speed Merchant" and the phone number is (408) 295-0930.

Thanks,
Frank

K&N FIPK

Hey let us know when u have installed it. I hear a lot of question about performance from these kind of upgrades, esp. for the 4.9L. I have the same engine and just as curious if the company really claims a min of 8 HP.

Looks like you got the filter for a very good price, did it come with a new Mass air sensor or do u have to use the stock one?

I don't have the kit yet, they said it could take about a week to get in. As I understand it, being a generation 1 kit, it simply replaces the air box and connects right into the factory intake tube.

I'll let you know when I get it and get it installed.

I did my 96 5.0 with the same FIPK kit yesterday. Its basically just a cone K&N in the place of the airbox. A couple of brackets to hold it there. The directions tell you to disconnect the negative battery cable so I guess that kind of answers the question on whether you should or not. The sound is louder when full throttle is applied, I dont think I will get the full benifit of the increased intake air until I finish the dual exhaust. It does look good though.

I have a 5.0 96 Bronco. Does the 4.9 have a fresh air tube for the filter? The 5.0 has a fresh air tube that runs from the filter box to the grille, below the hood level. I wonder how the hot engine temp would affect the performance when using the K&N cone? Does k&n address this in any way with use of some type of air tube??

The K&N instructions say to leave that tube where it is, unhooked from the stock box of course and then tie rapped to the fenderwell opening, I got rid of my intake tube long ago when I put the flat K&N in the stock airbox.

Ron: You say you disconnected/removed your intake tube after replacing stock filter, i.e. sounds like you have a stock system except for the new filter in the old box and no intake. Doesn't this increase the intake temps? After reading the PerfomanceUnlimited site (Project MPG), it seemed a good idea to have that intake hose, especially after wrapping it, which I have done. What has your experience been? Have you compared performance with and without the intake? I'd like to hear your story. Thanks!

K&N FIPK

Well a couple of posts earlier when I said I did my 96 F150 5.0 with the same FIPK kit I really did mean that I installed a K&N FIPK. Then when "AIM" asked about the intake tube I told him what it says in the FIPK instructions and than I got rid of my intake tube long ago when I put the flat K&N in the stock airbox. So I started with a stock airbox, installed a flat K&N, got rid of the airtube and then just a few days ago installed the FIPK. The truck is louder when stomped on, acceleration seems to be better. I expect to see the full benifits of the potential airflow when I install dual exhaust. The cone K&N does look good. I have thought about maybe a couple of louvers strategically placed or maybe the cowl hood or maybe both.

K&N FIPK

I am getting ready to order the K&N FIPK and next summer want to bolt on dual exhaust. I have been looking at Flowmaster, but was wondering if anyone out there has exerience with another brand that performes well. Also, dual muffler or just split a dual pipe from a single muffler? Any input is welcome. Thanks guys.
