Right after purchasing my '97 Aerostar, I took it on a trip to South Florida and back. About 500 miles roundtrip, almost all on expressways.
The van ran fine, but one thing that I noticed was that when I pulled off the expressway, the transmission seemed to shift hard for a while. I stopped someplace for gas, and when I started off again, the transmission shifted smooth.
This van is new to me, but has 97k miles. I'm planning to have the transmission serviced when I get back to Florida- change the fluid and clean out the screen. Anything else I should look for?
Most likely it is just slightly low on fluid - these transmissions are sensitive to improper levels. Your planned service should restore normal function. Might check your external transmission cooler for blockage and ensure the radiator has the proper amount of coolant. Both function to cool the hot transmission fluid.
