Have any of you installed a full-width rear view mirror screen? The other day I was following a GMC pickup that was equipped with one. I was very impressed by the image quality. It appeared to be fed by a camera integrated into the tailgate handle. I want one of these in addition to my backup camera because it will have a FOV more like a regular rear view mirror so I have a heads-up solution for me to see behind me even when my cab/bed is piled high with stuff. I know some of you will suggest a double-DIN Android head unit but that is not a heads-up solution.
I have not, but you've sparked my curiosity so I'm following....I like that most seem to integrate a dash cam, which is something I've been considering adding anyway...If I can find one a way to make the rear camera work with my travel trailer it would be brilliant.
I have seen this in trucks and other vehicles from time to time when behind them.
Recently we test drove a 2020 Subaru Ascent and it had this option/feature. It was there in case the back of the vehicle was full of stuff and you could not use the rear view mirror as it was intended. You, pushed a button at the bottom of the mirror and it changed to a full screen display. Surprisingly it was very clear and I thought the feature was quite useful.
I don't have any other advice or thoughts on the matter, but I am willing to help with development or overall design if you need to bounce ideas off of someone. This is an interesting project.
I've been researching mirror monitors that don't have integrated cameras since I already have a dashcam. Hoo boy there's slim pickin's. Also, I cannot figure out if any of the tailgate handles with integrated cameras are compatible with these monitors. It seems all of them output through an RCA plug which indicates resolution and/or framerate is not great.
Agreed on the resolution not being great via an RCA type connector and cable, but at that screen size 1080p/720p may look like very crisp due to the pixel count.
Brightness and contrast may be a concern.
Are the mirrors with front facing cameras using another style connector for the rear view?
I have driven a few trucks that have part of the mirror as a camera new from the factory. Definitely a nice feature. As for the rig there’s one on my endless to do list that can show 3 cams at once on the rear view. My truck has manual mirrors, for what it would take to convert to power I thought why not go camera crazy lol Will try to find the model when I get home.

I replaced the mirror in my sxs with a monitor. I couldn't find a mirror based one without a forward camera, or like 1/3 screen in the mirror so I wound up getting a small monitor, like 4x6 and mounting it where the rear view mirror was.
Works OK, but for that application I would like a larger screen and probably a different aspect ratio. Learning curve....

That's an intriguing idea. What I like about the mirror monitors is that it can still function as a regular mirror when the monitor is not in use. However, I think LCD monitors are so reliable now that the monitor failing is not a concern. Have cops ever given you grief for not having a "real" rearview mirror?
Depends on the state, but if you have exterior mirrors I don't think you need interior mirrors.
I couldn't really see anything out the sxs anyways.
My truck almost always has a camper or enclosed gooseneck, so that mirror is usually useless anyways.
Other issue you may run into is camera quality. Many of the waterproof rear view cameras are not great resolution wise. Will have to shop around to find one. Maybe at a minimum 1080P . The screen version rear view cameras I personally have seen have been average. Not saying there aren't good ones as the one you speak of sounds really good. Just might cost a bit to get a usable system. Personally I think jts a great idea. Lots of blind areas round these trucks. Anything that helps fill in them gaps is a winner
I know of a few new trucks (talking big line haul trucks here) that have a screen hooked up to a rear camera. And I think one of the new Volvo's dont have wing mirrors, they have small cameras to look rearward and the monitors inside the cab mounted on the A pillar. So the technology is clearly there.
My Blackvue dashcam finally died so I replaced it with a Pormido D50 mirror dashcam. It has three discrete cameras (front, rear and interior) unlike most other mirror dashcams that have the front camera built into the mirror.
All three cameras displayed at once. It will spend most of its time as a rear view monitor though.
